New Music China: Hiperson – She Came Back From The Square

In music that drips with attitude and charisma there's hardly the need to stick to one defining genre. The play around with Jazz, short intros and generally seem to be allowing their minds to run wild. A gorgeous album.

An album that was not totally anticipated, but thoroughly appreciated, Hiperson made their comeback this May with the fantastic follow-up to 2015’s No Need For Another History, interestingly entitled She Came Back From The Square.

It’s just another in a growing list of fantastic albums put out this year by Maybe Mars. Hiperson again eschew modern trends like Math Rock, Shoegaze and Hip Hop – how likely was it that they would killing MCs on this album? Not very… but still – in favour of old-school, straightforward guitar distortion and rock.

The Chengdu five-piece are by no means plain and ordinary here. One of their defining characteristics is the unpredictable nature of front-woman, Chen Sijiang’s undulating vocals. Tracks like The History employ some french language poetry (?) moments of standalone, slow-paced drums, with vocal duties trading back and forth between male and female a la Blonde Redhead.

In music that drips with attitude and charisma there’s hardly the need to stick to one defining genre. The play around with Jazz, short intros and generally seem to be allowing their minds to run wild. A gorgeous album.
